Built-In and Architectural Woodwork

  • A Custom Approach. I approach built-in work from a completely different standpoint than the trim carpenters and contractors you are likely familiar with. I believe that built-in work deserves the same level of detail as any other furniture piece. My work will NOT be assembled using cheap plywood, pocket screws and butt joints. I use solid wood construction and fully select for grain color and direction. My doors are made with bookmatched single board panels up to 20" wide with full mortise and tenon joinery; no cope-and-stick router cut joinery that we have all seen come apart. Hand-cut leaded restoration glass is also available as an option for doors as well as glass doors with fine wood muntins. Glass is held in place with glazier's points and is glazed with colored glazing putty, no cheap glass clips. Face frames are typically assembled using hand cut dovetails or mortise and tenon joinery depending on the design. Another important distinction is that I make my own custom mouldings. I have knowledge of classical architectural orders and use that knowledge to design my moulding profiles which can be made in any species. This allows me to work beyond the typical stock profiles available in hardware stores to give your commission character. Like the furniture pieces, my built-in work typically receives a hand rubbed French polish finish - or lacquer where increased durability is called for - and is finished with a fine paste wax.
